Queen Fashioned Lover Boy

Queen fashioned lover boy is a great song written by Freddy Mercury and was one of the many music hall style songs on their 1976 album A Day at the Races. It was a hit on both sides of the pond and reached 17 on the UK singles chart. The song opens with piano and vocals and gradually builds in intensity, until drums bass and guitar take over for the chorus. It’s a great way to introduce the band and their sound. Then Brian May takes over for a nice guitar solo. The bridge sung by Mercury (“Hey boy where’d you get it from, Hey boy where did you go?”) is another nice touch to the song.

Some people have interpreted the lyrics of the song as gay, which is understandable given the vaudeville/cabaret style of the song. But if you look at all of Noel Coward’s camp/love songs, like seaside rendezvous and lazing, they don’t imply in their lyrical content a homosexual relationship. I think Freddie was really good at digging into different styles of music and picking up the nuances that set them apart from each other.
